How Tick Size and Tick Value Affect Futures Trading
A futures quote can move by only a fraction of a point while producing a meaningful change in account value. The connection between that price movement and the resulting profit or loss is determined by two contract specifications: tick size and tick value.
In futures trading, tick size is the smallest permitted price movement for a contract. Tick value is the cash gain or loss created by that movement for one contract. The figures vary across stock indices, energy, metals, agricultural products, interest rates, and contract sizes, so familiarity with one market does not transfer automatically to another.
Small Price Changes Can Carry Large Values
The E-mini S&P 500 futures contract moves in increments of 0.25 index points. Each tick is worth $12.50 per contract. A one-point move contains four ticks and changes the position’s value by $50.

The Micro E-mini version follows the same 0.25-point price increment, but each tick is worth $1.25. Its chart can look identical to the larger contract while the monetary exposure is one-tenth of the size.
That difference changes everything around position sizing.
Crude oil futures provide another comparison. The standard contract is quoted in increments of $0.01 per barrel, with a conventional tick value of $10 per contract. A price move from $75.00 to $75.40 represents 40 ticks, or $400 for one contract.
The number of decimals on the screen is not the risk. Contract specifications convert those decimals into money.
Stops Must Be Converted Into Ticks
A technical stop is usually selected from the chart first. It might sit below a swing low, beyond a consolidation boundary, or above the high of a failed breakout. The distance then needs to be converted into ticks before the number of contracts can be calculated.
Suppose an E-mini S&P 500 trade enters at 5,200.00 with a stop at 5,195.00. The distance is five index points, equal to 20 ticks. At $12.50 per tick, one contract carries $250 of price risk before commissions and possible slippage.
If the account’s maximum planned loss is $300, one contract may fit. Two contracts would expose $500 before costs, even though the five-point stop looks modest on the chart.
Experienced traders perform this calculation before submitting the order. Beginners often choose the contract quantity first, then discover the monetary size of the stop only after price moves against them.
The chart measures distance. The contract measures consequence.
Volatility Can Expose a Sizing Error
Consider crude oil consolidating before a weekly US inventory report. The market has held within a 30-cent range, and a trader places a buy-stop order above resistance, expecting a breakout if inventories decline more than forecast.
The report produces a surprise draw. Oil jumps through resistance, triggers the order, then pulls back 18 cents as early buyers take profit. That routine retracement equals 18 ticks, or $180 per standard contract. With three contracts, the position fluctuates by $540 before the broader direction is clear.
A trader who focused only on the 18-cent movement may have expected a small pullback. The tick value reveals that the account is carrying a much larger decision.
Counterintuitively, a contract with a smaller tick size is not necessarily less risky. Fine price increments can still carry a high tick value, and a volatile market may pass through hundreds of ticks during an ordinary session. Risk depends on tick value, stop distance, contract quantity, and volatility together.
Transaction Costs Also Use the Tick Framework
Commissions and exchange fees are normally quoted in cash, but their significance is easier to judge in ticks. If the round-trip cost equals $6 and the contract’s tick value is $12.50, the trade starts almost half a tick behind before slippage.
For short-term strategies targeting only a few ticks, that cost can consume a large share of the expected gain. A method that looks profitable on a chart may lose its edge once realistic entries, exits, and fees are included.
Bid-ask spreads matter for the same reason. A one-tick spread is inexpensive in one contract and substantial in another. During economic releases or thin trading hours, the spread can widen while stop orders execute at the next available price.
For practical futures trading preparation, open the exchange or broker specification page and record the tick size, tick value, contract multiplier, trading hours, and margin requirement. Then convert the planned entry-to-stop distance into ticks and multiply it by the tick value and number of contracts.
Add estimated fees and at least a realistic slippage allowance. If the resulting loss exceeds the account limit, use fewer contracts, consider a smaller version of the contract, or reject the trade. The order ticket should confirm a risk calculation already completed, not reveal the exposure after execution.
